Jakes Off-Road Triathlon: The Ultimate Test of Grit in Treasure Beach
The Date and Location
On Saturday, April 26, 2025, the small but vibrant community of Treasure Beach, Jamaica, will come alive with the energy of athletes from around the world, all converging for the legendary Jakes Off-Road Triathlon.

The Start of the Race
The race is set to begin at 6 AM—but in true “Jamaican time,” it starts when it starts. Known as the world’s longest-running off-road triathlon, this iconic event has been testing endurance, spirit, and sheer willpower since its inception in 1996 by Jason Henzell and Amy Gottlieb.
More Than Just a Race
This isn’t your typical triathlon—Jakes brings a distinct Jamaican flavor, making it a race like no other. The course is as breathtaking as it is brutal, showcasing the raw, untamed beauty of Jamaica’s south coast. Competitors kick off with a 300-meter swim in the turquoise waters of Great Bay before transitioning to the bike leg—a true test of grit. Along the way, they’ll face the infamous “Big Groun”, a steep incline that forces many to push their bikes to the top. The route continues past Geneva, down a steep descent near the police station, and alongside the iconic fishing boat that welcomes participants back into Treasure Beach.
The final challenge is a grueling 7-kilometer run. A brief respite awaits under the shade of massive Acacia trees near Jack Sprat before runners head into the rising sun, navigating a rugged loop past Sandy Bank, around Great Pond, through Cobweb Lane, and into Old Wharf and Calabash Bay. The journey ends at Jack Sprat’s entrance, where the infectious rhythms of reggae, dancehall, and soca welcome finishers—along with a well-earned, cooling wet towel.
What sets the Jakes Off-Road Triathlon apart is its unique blend of laid-back island vibes and fierce competition. Athletes of all levels—from seasoned triathletes to weekend warriors—gather not just to test their limits, but to embrace the warm hospitality of Treasure Beach. The community rallies around every participant, offering encouragement, unique awards, and the kind of camaraderie that only Jamaica can provide.
As one past participant put it, “If you love off-the-beaten-path travel and a good fitness challenge, you’ll love Jake’s Off-Road Triathlon in Treasure Beach, Jamaica” (Intentional Travelers, 2014). More than just a race, Jakes is a test of resilience, a celebration of community, and an authentic immersion into island culture.
From humble beginnings to an internationally recognized endurance event, the Jakes Off-Road Triathlon has remained true to its roots—offering a race that’s tough, exhilarating, and unforgettable. Whether you come to compete or cheer, one thing is certain: on April 26, 2025, Treasure Beach is the place to be.
