Jakes Hotel's seaside spa in Calabash Bay: treatment rooms open to the sea breeze, and body products made from coffee, coconut, mango, seaweed and aloe grown in the hotel's gardens.
The spa
Driftwood Spa makes its own scrubs, wraps and other products from what grows in the Jakes gardens: coffee, coconut, mango, seaweed and aloe. Like the hotel, it keeps to a local ethos, drawing on Jamaica's traditions of care and healing and on fresh local ingredients.
The spa has its own corner of the Jakes grounds, right on the water, with four open-air rooms made for couples. The sea breeze, the sound of the waves and the birds are part of the treatment. Each visit begins with a cool towel scented with the spa's own signature fragrance.
Its founder, Laura Henzell, planned it that way on purpose. Other spas she visited put guests in dark, enclosed rooms, and she wanted one that made the most of being beside the Caribbean Sea, with an outdoor shower to finish.
